RESEARCH / QUESTIONS IN PROGRESS

Curiosity, given
a method.

How can we move between the structure of a sound, the experience of listening, and a model that makes testable predictions?

Musical Intelligence

Musical Intelligence is an executable computational architecture developed by Amaç Erdem to investigate relationships between musical structure, perception and cognition. The framework is a direction for research: its implementations, outputs and empirical evaluations need to be understood separately.

Listening in context

The website begins with a small question: does an identical ending feel different after different preceding sounds? Its synthetic examples let you compare your impressions. They do not collect participant data and do not establish a scientific result.

Acoustic structure, expectation and experience can be studied at different levels. A model’s prediction is one object of inquiry; a person’s reported experience is another.

Making the boundary visible

We label what a visual represents. A spectrum can be derived from recorded samples. A model output depends on a specified computation. An illustration communicates a concept. Human evidence requires an empirical study.

On this site, the folded sound sculpture uses an actual spectral analysis; its folding and lighting are artistic transformations. No brain activity is measured.
